Crown the king: Sony has finally revealed lifetime sales for the PlayStation 2, a long-speculated figure that cements the machine as the best-selling game console of all time. As part of a recently launched page celebrating the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand, Sony confirmed the PlayStation 2 sold more than 160 million units in its lifetime.

Sony last shared PS2 sales figures in 2011, saying at the time that it had sold 150 million units since its debut in 2000.

The successor to Sony's original PlayStation had some big shoes to fill, and it all started with a curious external design. Some might describe it as unique but that wouldn't be entirely accurate considering Sony modeled it after the Atari Falcon030. In fact, Sony's patent for the PS2 even references the "ornamental design" it purchased from Atari.

We have known for some time that the PS2 was the best-selling game console to date – we just didn't have an exact number to go on. At 160 million units, we now know it truly sits at the top of the mountain and is roughly six million units ahead of the Nintendo DS, a system that was discontinued in 2013.

The Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, still has a chance to break the PS2's record but with sales having slowed as of late, it is looking increasingly less likely. As of the end of September 2024, Nintendo has sold just over 146 million Switch consoles. A strong holiday season will only add to the total but with the Switch 2 on track to be announced by April 2025, eclipsing the PS2 will be tough. Perhaps a price cut could help, but such moves are few and far between these days.

Outside of the Switch, no other modern console has any chance of capturing the record anytime soon. Sony has only sold 65.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles and Microsoft is doing far worse with the Xbox Series with sales of just 28.3 million units since launch.

Sony should have released those number 2 DECADES ago....why would anyone care when they can't even offer native PS2 compatibility with their latest system.

What's next?... Nintendo releasing their Super Nintendo numbers in 2024?

Still have my PS2 in the box. I haven't played it for maybe a 10-12 years. I had lots of games for it that I enjoyed and even after it was no longer my go-to for a console and gaming it served as a DVD player for a few years. The original controller that came with it broke and I got a couple of replacement ones from Game Stop years ago, they both still work last time I played the console.

My two favourite consoles are the PS2 and xbox360 . Haven't bought an xbox since the 360 so cant comment on them but I wasn't impressed with the PS4 games as too many of them had crap framerates and I expected better by then .

My PS2 still works and now and then me and my mates play some old games. Good times.

I wonder how many were 2nd purchases when they had to replace the many broken fats.
I had\have a slim, and it still works now. Only way for an occasional game of Carnage Hearts.

True, makes you wonder how many of these sales were re-purchases for defective consoles out of warranty. Slims also aren't very durable. You're lucky yours still works.

I've owned 3 PS2s. Never had a fat. My first 2 were slim models, and the later was a super slim. My first slim just completely died, and with the 2nd slim and the super slim, the disc readers died.

Did you even read the article? In 2009 they were still announcing those numbers.
You have to admit it is a bit questionable. Sony said they sold 153 million PS2 systems when they halted production worldwide in 2013. Now they have added another 7 million.

"Between its release in March 2000 and the end of 2012, Sony’s second console handily outsold every other home video game console ever made with 153.68 million machines sold."
