The Asus ROG NUC is a tiny little gaming PC that will fit in any space that’ll fit a cable box. That small size does mean you have to put up with laptop-class hardware, but it still provides an awesome gaming experience, especially at 1080p.

I love the idea behind the Asus ROG NUC 970 – use well-proven laptop hardware to build a very compact gaming machine that's equally well suited to use on a desk or connected up to a TV in the living room. The NUC 970 does achieve this goal, with a desirable mix of features and performance, plus DIY or prebuilt options. But at what cost? A high one as it turns out – the 970 is much pricier than a similar-performing gaming laptop or larger desktop computer.

The ASUS ROG NUC 970 is a very powerful mini PC that can handle modern gaming easily thanks to its Intel Core Ultra 9 processor and RTX 4070 L graphics card. While it uses laptop components, it has far more ports than most gaming laptops offer and doesn't take up a lot of room. Being able to stand it upright or lay it down adds to its convenience. This mini PC's setup is far more expensive than a similarly configured gaming laptop, though. But if a small form factor is what you really want, this is a great gaming mini PC to go with.

The Asus ROG NUC is for the PC gamer who wants faff-free fun at 1440p, in the most petite package possible, and doesn't care about a future upgrade path beyond memory and storage. If that's you, and you're willing to part with this kind of money, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Better still, If you're up for shopping around for DDR5, storage, and a Windows key, go for the Barebones version and install them yourself. You'll save yourself literally hundreds.

This is a really cool system and one that I would use daily without reservation by just adding RAM, SSDs, and Windows 11 Pro. I tend to use pretty high-end systems, so that is saying something. At the end of the day, some are going to rightfully lust after this system. Others are going to be confused by it. Perhaps that is the point. I do not see this as the perfect system for everyone, but if you just want a cool mini PC with a NVIDIA GPU and plenty of M.2 expansion, then this is going to be a strong option.
