Starship Troopers: Extermination

It’s just sad that it’s so unstable. On the one hand, I’ve gotten so much enjoyment out of the game. On the other, it’s crashed to a degree that really isn’t cool. Such an experience is always hard to rate, weighing how much I enjoy it as a videogame against its quality as a product.

Starship Troopers: Extermination is a pulpy, schlocky and suitably violent take on the Starship Troopers universe that gives you big beefy guns and a ton of exploding alien bugs to get busy decimating in online warfare. There are some big old hordes to take down, thanks to some impressive tech on display, and everything looks and feels properly great when you're in the thick of the acid-spewing action.

The base game mechanics in Starship Troopers: Extermination is a blast to play, and the game loop itself is satisfying. Sure, I’m a sucker for the ‘horde shooter’ type games and mashing it with one of my favorite science fiction B movies was a sure-fire way to get me hyped. But more than that, Extermination is a great game, the models for the bugs look exactly like they did back in 97. Overall, the graphics in this early access game are quite good. In fact, my biggest issue with this game is that it IS an early access game.

The issues with the game crashing and the lack of content doesn't hold me back on recommending this game. Starship Troopers being in early access just means all issues with content and bugs “no pun intended” will be squashed in upcoming updates. I will be re-reviewing this game in the future as more content is released.
